Activities to Interact with Text
One activity that I have used with great success is the literature circle with students. When I use this strategy, students are allowed to choose which book they read and set their goals for the reading and discussion of the books. I have included my teacher as researcher action research paper as an example of how I have used this strategy.

Incorporating 21st Century tools and skills is also important to help students better understand and interact with texts. There are many tools that I have used with students including blogs, message boards, and various web based reading programs. I have included two projects that incorporate 21st Century tools with reading skills. The first project, which was for ECI 521, used an online book club to encourage student discussion. The second project, which was part of my final project for ECI 524, is an online based literature circle project for the high school classroom.

There are also other projects that I have created in classes that I would like to use as activities in my classroom. I have included one of those, a bookcast for ECI 521, below. This bookcast, which focuses on how a major theme of a novel impacts the world at large, is in response to reading Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley. |
