Comprehension Strategy resources
In teaching comprehension strategies, I use the minilesson approach usually in whole group instruction. My goal with minilessons is to teach students how to use a strategy and then practice this strategy in small groups to scaffold student learning. Below are some of the handouts and resources that I have used to teach various comprehension strategies. My knowledge about comprehension strategies and how best to teach them is a culmination of topics covered in my diagnostic reading courses and ECI 545.
Inferences
To teach inferences, I use pictures and the graphic organizer to help students understand that an inference is given the information provided combined with prior knowledge to arrive at a logical conclusion. Then, we watch a short animated video like Pigeon Impossible and the accompanying worksheet to make inferences about the characters, setting, and plot. Since there are no words in the animated video, everything we learn is through inferences. Finally, I have students practice their new skill using scenarios from various pieces of literature and informational texts.
